Shakespeare's Globe
2009 Season
Young Hearts |
|
Introduction
|
I can't believe
that this is already Dominic Dromgoole's fourth season as Artistic
Director of Shakespeare's Globe. 'Young Hearts' is the
theme this year.
The season's productions are:-
|
|
The first production this summer
is Romeo & Juliet. The tragic heroine
is played by Ellie Kendrick who played the leading role
in the BBC's recent Diary of Anne Frank.
The production opens on 23rd
April and runs until 23rd August.
|
|
|
A play written by Ché Walker first
seen at The Globe in 2008 is set in contemporary London.
A 'panorama of contemporary London, encompassing the
cruel and the tender, the gutter and the stars.'
The Frontline
returns to the Globe from 5th
to 23rd May.
|
|
|
Director Thea Sharrock is staging
her first Shakespeare production. Her Rosalind is
Naomi Frederick.
The production runs from 30th
June to 10th October.
|
|
|
Although there was a production of
Troilus and Cressida at the Globe in 2005 It had a very
limited run, gender-blind casting, and was played in
original pronunciation. While I should like to
hear more of the last, this difficult play was not easy
to understand with such distractions - even for me who
played Hector in a school production!
Matthew Dunster directs this year's presentation and
Trystan Gravelle plays Achilles.
It runs from 12th July
to 20th September. |
|
|
A new version of the play by
ancient Greek Euripides by Frank McGuinness. The
title part is played by Penny Downie whom I saw on New
Year's Eve 2008 in the 'David Tennant' Hamlet by the RSC
in London. She was very good, but no, if you were
wondering, David Tennant's back still prevented him from
appearing until four days later.
It runs from 2nd to 23rd
August. |
|
A New World - A Life of
Thomas Paine
|
|
A new play by long established
playwright Trevor Griffiths, this is the story of the
18th century radical Tom Paine and is directed by
Dominic Dromgoole. In association with Richard
Attenborough.
The production runs from 29th August to 9th October.
|
|
|
|
The final production of the season
is a return of the 2007 Dominic Dromgoole production of
the Shakespeare comedy. It has a short run from 25th September to 10th October after touring the
country. |
