C.R.W. Nevinson
|
|
|
|
by Richard Ingleby
|
Remembered as one of the greatest painters of the First
World War.Very little has been written about Nevinson.
The book has excellent essays by Jonathon Black, Richard Ingleby,
David Cohen & Gordon Cooke covering his life as a war
artist, his art & writings, & as a printmaker, with
photographs & pictures throughout.
|
The above book accompanied the major exhibition at the
Imperial War Museum, London, & Yale Centre for British
Art, Newhaven.

Oxtoby’s Rockers |
|
|
|
by David Oxtoby |
I first saw & became interested in David Oxtoby’s
works in the 1970s, when he had an exhibition at the Redfern
Gallery London. He captures the movement of the musicians so well.
Sadly he lost a large amount of his collection
in a fire when it was in transit. 80 Illustrations.

Art In The Making Rembrandt |
|
|
|
by Bomford/ Brown/ Roy |
This splendid book was published to coincide with the equally splendid exhibition at the National Gallery London
in 1988. Methods of authenticity have improved rapidly over the last 50 years with X-rays & infra-red photography.
It is a technical achievement on a vast scale. The book follows Rembrandt’s application of paint, layer by layer.
His painting materials, methods & in-depth survey of paint medium are all detailed. There are 20 colour photographs
& 101 B/W; some are in close-detail.
Rembrandt’s technique is perhaps conveyed in the celebrated remark of the German Impressionist painter Max Liebermann
‘Whenever I see a Frans Hals {Rembrandt’s greatest predecessor in Dutch portraiture} I feel like painting, but
when I see a Rembrandt, I feel like giving up!’ |

Modern Painters John Ruskin |
|
|
|
edited by David Barrie |
John Ruskin wrote Modern Painters in 1843. It was
to become one of the great art critiques. It helped to establish
Turner’s reputation as one of England's finest artists. Tragic that Ruskin
destroyed all of Turner’s erotic drawings. The original book was of epic
proportions & rambling in parts, so thankfully David Barrie has abridged this
edition & still retains Ruskin’s dazzling argumentative style. A fine
concise edition with over 90 Illustrations.
