An excellent, funny book. It's obvious that the painter
Nina Hamnett {a pupil of Sickert’s} liked and admired .
Their repartee was well matched.

Ivon Hitchens |
|
|
|
by Peter Khoroche |
Hitchens had a highly distinctive style combining abstraction & figuration.
He had been awoken to an interest in the paintings of Cézanne by reading
Clive Bell’s ‘Art’. Hitchens was a member of the 7 & 5 society in the 1920s.
An excellent book giving an insight into Hitchens’ techniques & his writings.
He worked on the principle of "putting together" of lines, masses &
colours to make a harmony, or ‘visual sound’ together with three structural
elements with which to build up the harmonies, line & notan {Japanese word
for harmony of light & dark within a single brush stroke}. He was influenced
by the music of Messiaen, & one sees a striking resemblance in mood &
colour scale to Hitchens’ work. A riveting text by Khoroche

Peter Howson |
|
|
|
by Robert Heller |
Peter Howson is one of Scotland's leading figurative painters.
His expressionistic style & vibrant colours leap off the page. As Robert
Heller states "He uses physical distortion to generate the psychological
force of his work". His style has changed somewhat over the years. There
is a very haunting pencil drawing of his grandfather rendered in 1973.

Part I covers the revised edition of Augustus John Volume 1
"The Years of Innocence" published in 1974. Part II is entitled
"Years of Experience."
This is an entertaining book, but scholarly & extensively researched.
Michael Holroyd describes the problems of researching & publishing
such a book in his amusing preface, which has a quote at the beginning
by Tom Stoppard; "If an idea's worth having once its worth having twice".
Contains drawings, paintings & photographs.
